Leo and JWT sparkle at MENA Cristals

Written by Eliot Beer, Sunday, 07 February 2010

JWT's Grand Cristal-winning work for Virgin Megastore, one of the many familiar campaigns at the MENA Cristals.Last week was MENA Cristal week, and the Lebanese awards certainly rocked our Kasbahs, eh, guys!

Er, guys? Guys? Wake up...

Yeah, so it feels like not everyone is exactly thrilled to pieces at this year’s Cristals – we know we’re not. And it’s not just because all the other media/marketing editors got to go on a jolly to Mzaar.

Gits.

Anyway, as pretty much the last award ceremony of the cycle, the 2010 MENA Cristals finally bring down the curtain on an often ignominious, occasionally glorious, creative year for the regional industry.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given last year’s... excitement, the range of agencies entering – and winning – was rather smaller than in previous years.

The big winners were Leo Burnett and JWT, by our reckoning each garnering three Grand Cristals across their regional offices, with Leo also on nine regular trophies, just pipping JWT’s eight.

Among the media agencies, Starcom edged out OMD with five Cristals to OMD’s four it appears we can't count: OMD, we are told, edged out Starcom, with both taking five awards, but OMD winning Media Agency of the Year on points. Apologies

Elsewhere, TBWA\Raad picked up a couple of gongs, and Expression also walked away with one.

JWT Beirut’s campaign for Le Mall, a new shopping complex in the Lebanese capital, picked up both a Grand Cristal in Media, and a regular award in the Cyber category, which had no Grand winners.

Other, familiar campaigns, including Leo Burnett’s Stop The Suffering campaign for Pert Plus, also grabbed multiple gongs – three for Pert, including a Grand Cristal in the Integrated category, which, incidentally, Leo Burnett swept clean.

JWT managed a similar feat in the Promo and Direct category, which saw the agency’s Stress Ball campaign bounce off with the Grand.

Elsewhere TBWA’s Hansaplast ads – those which caused much hilarity at the Lynx, when placed side-by-side with almost-identical executions from JWT in the exhibition – picked up a gong in Daily Press. But whither JWT’s versions?

Anyway, that’s that – congrats to the winners, commiserations to the losers. The full list of winners is up at the MENA Cristal site.

We’re now just over a month away from the Lynx, when we’ll see the first major outpouring of new award entries – and we get to see how much we all learned from last year.

This article was updated to correct details of OMD's performance at the Cristals.
