DDB launches telco branding unit

Written by Eliot Beer, Tuesday, 02 June 2009

Luciola DDB's lovely new logo: a bug. Nice.DDB has rolled out Luciola DDB, a dedicated branding wing for the region’s ever-buoyant telecoms sector.

Najam Khawaja, CEO of DDB Gulf, will head up the unit, along with strategy director Abdul Karim and marketing director Eiléen Lee.

“Luciola DDB aims to help clients think outside the box and help develop brands through our deep understanding of the consumer and use of our proprietary tools,” said Khawaja in a press release, scoring at least two on the Buzzword Bingo.

“The new group will identify consumer and technology trends specifically related to the telecom sector. In an age when mobile connectivity is increasingly prevalent, Luciola DDB will connect technology and consumers, identify business opportunities, and provide strategic consulting anywhere in the world,” he added.

From the rhetoric, DDB is apparently pitching Luciola as a world-wide operation – but we’d guess the real targets are the Middle East’s telcos, which are a veritable fountain of money, if approached correctly, and are probably more immune to the recession than other industries.

“The telecom industry is undergoing continuous change as new technologies and applications continue to redefine the business, enabling greater connectivity and the creation of new communities. Luciola DDB will enable true engagement with the mobile lifestyle,” noted Patrick Ehringer, president of DDB MENA, in the release.
