LBC sex confessor arrested, sues LBC

Written by Eliot Beer, Sunday, 02 August 2009

Mazen Abdul JawadMazen Abdul Jawad, the man at the centre of a TV sex scandal, has been arrested in his home city of Jeddah, along with two friends who also appeared on the LBC programme featuring his story.

According to various media reports, the Prosecution and Investigations Commission is now considering what to charge Abdul Jawad with – most probably publicising vice.

Disturbingly, other reports suggest Abdul Jawad could even face the death penalty if convicted.

It’s unsurprising, then, that he may take legal action against LBC, for misrepresenting him, according to Arab News, who quoted Abdul Jawad’s lawyer as saying: “We will study the case and eventually present it to the Ministry of Information.”

And an official at the Ministry confirmed the sex braggart had filed a complaint against the Lebanese broadcaster.

“We will examine the petition thoroughly and will take an appropriate decision on this,” said the ministry’s media spokesman, Abdul Rahman Al Hazza, quoted in Gulf News.

Abdul Jawad – with a little help from his friends – surprised and shocked many viewers with his frank admissions about his sex life in Jeddah, including tips on how to pick up women and suchlike.

For its part, LBC is mostly keeping quiet at the moment, and refusing to comment until it’s had a chance to think up a decent excuse fully evaluate the situation.

The broadcaster’s spokespeople have already suggested that the programme which featured Abdul Jawad’s comments, The Bold Red Line, may be cancelled.

For us, the question that LBC should be answering is why it broadcast the segment in the first place – at least in this form – given the consequences that have inevitably played out.

I liked the editorial change from "to think up a decent excuse" to "ully evaluate the situation" :)
