Emap sites get all dolled up

Written by Eliot Beer, Thursday, 17 September 2009

Old vs new...Emap’s regional business web portals AMEInfo and Meed.com have both come out with spiffy new designs this week, bringing both sites kicking and screaming into the 20th 21st century. Or something.

AMEInfo has gone for a tidy-up rather than a complete revamp, increasing its page width and main column sizes, and tweaking its look by getting rid of the random splashes of colour (so 90s, dahling), with everything now rendered in a pleasant mix of black, grey and red.

Most significantly, the logo has been overhauled, retaining the stylised ‘A’ and red colour for the ‘AME’, but beefing up the initial letters, and going for a now-in-fashion-again serif typeface for the ‘info.com’. Yeah, just look at the logo, it’s easier than describing the damn thing.

The site has also added a new mid-page unit (MPU) ad slot, for to boost its advertising revenues. Also included in the revamp are new services, including a white-paper directory (the excitement!), and a section listing businesses for sale.

Rob Jones, AMEInfo’s editorial director, said in a press release on the site: “We felt that it was time to update the site. The additional services are part of our continued drive to bring us closer to our readers and ensure that we provide targeted, high-quality offerings to help them in their business needs.

“We also took the opportunity to change the page layout and give sections and content space to breathe, making it easier to navigate the site. We have also improved the site search and had digital design agency Rufus Leonard create a new, cleaner, more authoritative logo,” he added.

As for Meed.com’s redesign... well, it’s very nice, it’s just... it’s Maktoob.com. Really.

This isn’t a bad thing at all, but the new site is clearly terribly, terribly similar to Maktoob Business’s news portal.

Now, at this stage, we have to admit that we don’t really remember what the OLD Meed.com site looked like (seeing as we’re too cheap to pay for a subscription, we never really used it), so we pre-emptively apologise if it was Maktoob that nicked its design off Meed, and not the other way around.

We’re fairly sure that both of them nicked it from somewhere else in the first place, anyway, so it’s all good, bro. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and all that.

Anyway, the new Meed.com has all sorts of new exciting content and features and what have you, so that’s just tickety-boo.
