A Dubai TV reporter has gone missing, and may have been arrested, in the anti-government protests in Iran, the station says.
Quoted in a Reuters report, published on ArabianBusiness.com
and elsewhere, Dubai TV says Reda Al Basha, a Syrian journalist, went missing yesterday.
“We lost contact with him around midday,” said an anonymous source at Dubai TV, quoted by Reuters.
“We notified the authorities that he's disappeared and is unreachable, but have not had any confirmation yet on whether he's been arrested. We are now sure he's not among the dead in the clashes, but are still waiting for the list of detainees to find out if he's been arrested,” added the source.
It’s illegal for foreign press to report on opposition demonstrations in Iran, under a law passed after the last wave of demos in the summer, which saw the deaths of demonstrators spread through social media networks, especially Twitter.
These latest protests have so far seen eight people killed, including Seyed Ali Mousavi, the nephew of opposition leader and defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. His funeral will probably give further impetus to the protests.
Meanwhile, despite the ban, many foreign journalists are covering the protests – and risking arrest, or worse, as a result.
