More changes are afoot in the editorial sections of The National, following Martin Newland’s move earlier this week.
Business editor Bill Spindle will now join Newland in management, becoming business projects manager, in charge of developing new business publications and suchlike, according to an internal email at the paper.
Tom Ashby will now take Spindle’s place as business editor, moving up from the deputy position.
In turn he is expected to promote a new deputy in his place, a prospect that was apparently greeted with less than 100% enthusiasm by some journalists.
When asked for a comment, one business reporter at The National declared himself “too depressed to speak”. Hmm.
Despite the protestations of some, though, we are not in a position to pass comment on the editorial changes at the paper, not knowing Spindle, Ashby, or any of the potential candidates for deputy business editor, which may include former Arabian Business editor Sean Cronin.
We would note, though, that journalists as a group tend to err on the side of pessimism when it comes to management changes – in other words, we’re a bunch of miserable sods who would complain about paper cuts if it was raining $100 bills.
We’ll be interested to see how the new business desk top team gets on, though.
