Cairo dominates film shortlist

Written by AdNation Editor, Tuesday, 16 March 2010

Leo Burnett Cairo's work for Melody TV is in the running for the Grand Prix once again. As you’d expect, Dubai’s dominance of the Lynx shortlists came to an end with the announcement of the TV/Cinema category, with Cairo-based agencies responsible for over half of the 34 entries. Boutique agency Elephant racked up 11 nominations for its Coca-Cola campaign, and Leo Burnett picked up six nominations, five of them for its Melody TV campaign – which, along with Leo Burnett Beirut’s “Check Check” for P&G’s Always, were the only ads on the shortlist to also make the TV Craft shortlist, meaning the judges loved the idea and the execution.

Tunisian agencies JWT and Memac Ogilvy got four nominations between them, while the UAE  got six, with Tonic responsible for three of those for its Burger King campaign. Leo Burnett offices picked up 30% of the nominations in total, with its Cairo, Beirut and Dubai offices all represented.

The unsurprisingly short Radio shortlist – just 13 entries – has just two ads from outside the emirates. Whether that means the UAE’s radio standards are higher, or just that the agencies have a lower embarrassment threshold we’re not sure.

The UAE also has the majority of entries on the Interactive shortlist , TBWA/RAAD Dubai just leads the way with six entries out of 30, just one more than Memac Ogilvy Dubai.
