Leo Burnett triumphs in paintball competition

Written by Eliot Beer, Sunday, 30 November 2008

Leo Burnett lifts the AdNation Paintball TrophyLeo Burnett beat all comers to become the first AdNation Paintball Champions last night, in the final round of the first AdNation Paintball Tournament.

The Leo team saw off The Brand Union in the quarter-finals, Tonic in the semis, and last but definitely not least, Wunderman in the final, to claim the title and take home the trophy.

The day started badly for Leo Burnett, as the firm’s second team ungallantly wimped out of the contest, unable to face the thought of going up against the fearsome Tonic exterminators. Leo Burnett 2’s captain mentioned something about the weather, work, and the Rugby 7s – but we know the truth. They just couldn’t take the pressure.

Leo Burnett 2’s undignified absence gave Tonic a free pass to the semis, while the other six teams had to slog their way through the quarter-finals.

Wunderman opened strongly, taking out Lowe MENA in an initially rather slow game of Capture The Flag. Leo Burnett then opened their winning streak with a handy victory against The Brand Union – although the latter won much kudos for being the best branded (natch) and most punctual team in this week’s contest.

TBWA\RAAD joined the semi-finalists with a decisive win against an uncertain Universal Media team; that’s what you get for not turning up the first week guys – you miss out on the practice...

The semi-finals opened with Tonic’s first game of the evening, against the formidable Leo Burnett side. Despite an impassioned fight by the independents, and much enthusiastic cheering from the spectators, though, Leo’s boys (and girl) were too much, and took Tonic apart.

TBWA and Wunderman took the field, with TBWA the favourites after their 3-0 winning streak in Round One. The fates were not smiling on TBWA last night, though, as Wunderman appeared to live up to their name and took out the entire team with zero casualties for the Wunder guys – cue much whooping and yelling.

Then the final: Leo Burnett and Wunderman, adversaries from Group A in last week’s opening matches, meeting again on the field of battle. Last week Wunderman bested Leo – this week it was not to be.

In contrast to the almost world-weary and laid back Leo team, Wunderman made a point of arguing issues such as the colour of uniforms, to the efficacy of their guns – pre-match jitters?

The grudge-match opened evenly, with Leo Burnett and Wunderman players trooping off. The Wunder casualties soon mounted, however, with four of their players heading out, in contrast to just two Leos.

As the final minutes ticked away, the tension mounted behind the protective netting – would there be time to mount a Wunderman counter-offensive? As it turned out, no.

The final whistle blew, and saw a jubilant Leo Burnett team heading out with hugs and yells – and a resigned but cheerful Wunderman team congratulate the winners.

Our congratulations to Leo Burnett, for a comprehensive victory against some extremely tough opponents.

And, just as importantly – our congratulations and thanks to all the teams that took part in the inaugural AdNation Paintball Competition (except for the ones that didn’t show up, anyway...)

Everyone played fantastic and sportsmanlike games throughout the whole contest – we hope you all had as much fun playing as we did hosting you, which was a lot, for the record.

Keep your eyes peeled for possible future events, as and when (and if...?) they happen.
